Discover Agriculture
This program offers students the chance to experience many areas of agriculture all in one place. Programs are held in October and are directed toward the NC Standard Course of Study for Science for fifth grade. The program is held at both the Children’s Home and again at the Arboretum at Tanglewood. Participants will have an opportunity to learn about some of the following (classes vary depending on the location): Farm Animals, Growing Fall Vegetables, Identifying trees native to Piedmont North Carolina, Water, Greenhouse Production, Building a Garden and Working with Soil & Water.
Down to Earth
Through this hands-on, minds-on program, 6th grade students get the basics of botany, the gist of gardening and the essentials of ecology. Students will use gardening to stimulate their senses and cultivate science process skills and life-skills. By gathering data using the scientific method, students will grow a sense of pride and responsibility.
Exploring Your Environment
4th grade students will receive basic ecological concepts to help develop scientific thinking and processing skills. Concepts include the four elements of life, connections among living things, and how all plants and animals are affected.
Heritage Days
In celebration of National Farm City Week, 4th graders attend the Heritage Days program held at the Dixie Classic Fairgrounds in September. Students tour stations that are set-up in the Yesterday Village spending twenty minutes at each station. The goal of the program is to teach the youth about North Carolina’s Heritage including quilting, agriculture/crops, music, herbs, goats or sheep, beef and dairy cattle, beekeeping, basket weaving/chair caning and water usage. The highlight of the day is a covered wagon ride pulled by two mules.
School Days
During the Dixie Classic Fair, Extension Agents from the NC Cooperative Extension Center offer information, short tours and hands-on activities for school groups ages preschool-5th Grade. This event is usually the first Monday of the fair during School Days.
