Books We Like

The Sun is Also a Star by Nicola Yoon. Fall in love with Daniel and Natasha, two very different teenagers who the Universe sends speeding towards a once-in-a-lifetime love. Through the course of 24 hours, Daniel, a Korean-American bound for Yale and Natasha, an undocumented Jamaican on the edge of deportation, find themselves fighting fate and falling in love.

The timeless tale of forbidden love comes alive with these two teens. One full of science and facts the other a poet couldn’t be more different but in the end they see just how opposites can attract.

Transcending the Young Adult genre, The Sun is Also a Star, sheds light on racial prejudices and current political tensions. In the end, Yoon creates a fantastic story that has a perfect balance of heart-wrenching and hopeful, grounded yet fanciful. A must-read for those of us who dare to dream just on the other side of reality.

Glory over Everything, by Kathleen Grissom. The year is 1830 and racial tensions are cresting throughout the states. Follow Jamie Pyke, a skilled artist and silversmith passing as a white aristocrat as he navigates the high society of Philadelphia and fleeing from his past as a runaway slave- the child of a southern black slave and her hate-filled master.

When Pan, Jamie’s precocious house servant comes up missing, Jamie flees to the Carolinas to search for Pan and return him home. With the help of Sukey, a fearless slave, Jamie navigates the Underground Railroad, the Virginian backwoods, and the Great Dismal Swamp searching for the boy.

Touching, disturbing, uplifting, and thought-provoking, Grissom is a superb storyteller who carefully constructs a detailed look into the antebellum era. Glory over Everything is set to be a contemporary classic and a must read for all who enjoy historical fiction.

Crazy Rich Asians by Kevin Kwan. Rachel Chu is an ABC, American born Chinese, or at least that is what she is brought up to believe. A modest New Yorker who could be described as humble, her world is turned upside down when her boyfriend, Nick invites her to his family home in Singapore.

While Rachel envisions a simple home and quiet family time she is floored when she realizes Nick’s home is more a palace and his quiet family is one of Singapore’s wealthiest. Thrust into a world of private planes, expensive cars and couture dresses, Rachel navigates the obstacle course that is being girlfriend to the most eligible bachelor in all of southeast Asia.

Hilariously funny and endlessly charming, Kwan hits all the right notes in the dizzyingly quick witted tale about old money, new money, and the social elite.
