THIS EVENT HAS BEEN CANCELLED DUE TO RAIN AND THUNDERSTORMS. PLEASE CONTACT 336-703-2665 FOR OTHER MULITICULTURAL EVENTS. Bring your lawn chairs and picnic baskets on Saturday,September 21st at 4pm for Lanterns of Hope, a summer family event celebrating diversity, hope, and peace. Lanterns of Hope is a long standing tradition with Forsyth County Public Library that brings together all segments of our increasingly diverse community in a spirit of mutual friendship and understanding. Based on the Japanese tradition of lighting and floating lanterns to honor the spirits of ancestors, it was used after the 1945 nuclear bombing of Hiroshima to remember those who died in that terrible tragedy. Over 500 cities worldwide have adopted the ceremony as a symbolic gesture to promote worldwide eace and understanding.

In Lanterns of Hope, the process of creating a lantern provides the opportunity for children and adults to see themselves as an active force for hope and positive change in the world and in our community. Each lantern is unique, though with many similarities and bound by a common hope for a more understanding world. Musician and storyteller Jon Sundell will share songs and tales of peace and friendship. An open-mic poetry reading will provide children and adults an opportunity to read their favorite poems or an original work. The event will be held at the beautiful C.G. Hill Memorial Park in Pfafftown, NC. For directions and more pictures of the park please click here .Come, be comforted with songs, inspired with poetry, and strengthened through each other’s hopes.
