Stories, Songs, and Fingerplays Weekly at Walkertown

Come meet Otis, a friendly little tractor, at storytime October 20th, 10:30 am. Besides plowing, Otis plays with every animal on the farm. But can he help a calf stuck in a mud pond or find the lost puppy after dark? Enjoy "Tractor Time" Oct. 20, followed by "Pumpkin Time" on Tues., Oct. 27.

Public library storytimes aim to develop Early Literacy in toddlers and preschoolers. Early literacy is what children need to know about reading and writing before they actually learn to read and write. The American Library Association identifies six skills that guide the fun we have at Walkertown Branch on Tuesdays at 10:30 am:

Print Motivation, or being excited about and interested in books
Narrative Skills, or telling stories and describing things
Enriched Vocabulary, or knowing the specific names of things
Print Awareness, or noticing print everywhere, knowing how to handle a book, and following words on a page
Letter Knowledge, or knowing the difference between how letters look, their names, and their sounds
And Phonological Awareness, or playing with the sounds in words.

When you make Tuesday Morning Storytime part of your weekly routine, you are developing emerging literacy in your child. Every trip to the library lays another block in the foundation you are helping provide, a foundation of literacy for years of future reading, writing, learning, and fun.
