Afterthoughts Book Club reads "The Tea Girl of Hummingbird Lane" January 11th at Walkertown

The Tea Girl of Hummingbird Lane is New York Times Bestselling author Lisa See’s latest novel. Published in 2017, it tells the story of a mother and daughter while immersing the reader in the life of the Ahka, one of China’s ethnic minorities that grow and harvest tea.

Li Yan is an unusually-educated Akha woman who spends backbreaking hours harvesting tea in China’s mountainous Yunnan province. After Li Yan has a daughter out of wedlock, she places her child up for adoption. Her daughter is adopted by a Californian couple and renamed Haley. Haley grows up in luxury and privilege in California, but eventually starts to wonder about her birth mother and the life and mother she left behind.

See, who also wrote the bestselling Snow Flower and the Secret Fan, carefully researched the Ahka people and Chinese tea culture for The Tea Girl of Hummingbird Lane. Readers will be engrossed by both the human story of Li Yan and Haley as well as the rich historical and cultural tapestry See's woven.

The Afterthoughts Book Club will meet on Thursday, January 11th at 11 am. Light refreshments will be served. All are welcome to join us for a friendly and interesting discussion!
