One More Thank You for a Great Summer, Walkertown!

Walkertown Branch Library had a blast in 2019's Summer Reading Program thanks to enthusiastic and ongoing support from the Walkertown area community! Thank you to all those who attended, volunteered, or supported the library and its programming this summer.

Sheila was the county-wide winner of the Summer Reading Drawing for ages 18+. This is the second year the county-wide adult winner came from Walkertown Branch Library.

It was a busy June and July with circulation and attendance both high. Over the course of the two months, almost 750 reading logs were returned by patrons of all ages! Our top readers this summer were Allaina V., who read 72 hours, Noah R., who read 30 books, and Darlene M., who read 72 books. Including those prolific and enthusiastic readers, we had a total of 928 hours read by kids ages from birth to eleven, 198 books read by teens and tweens ages 12-17, and 1,686 books read by adults ages 18+!

Tamra was our Summer Reading Drawing winner at Walkertown Branch Library for ages 18+. Her winning log was one of 572 reading logs for ages 18+ returned to the Walkertown Branch Library this summer.

In addition to collecting summer reading logs, the library held a large variety of successful and well-attended summer programming. New programs, as well as old favorites, meant there was something for everyone from toddlers and children to teens and adults. In June and July, we hosted 55 programs for kids and teens under 18 with over 2.300 participants! We've added a gallery of highlights from this summer's programs to the end of this post, so keep reading to see more.

Julia was excited to win the Summer Reading Drawing at Walkertown Branch Library for ages 12-17, she's been participating in our Summer Reading contest since she was 5 years old!

Some of the most popular programs included the Space Exploration Programs hosted by three JPL and NASA Solar System Ambassadors throughout the summer, with over 160 attendees across six programs, and a visit from the North Carolina Zoo on June 28 that had 100 attendees. Summer Reading concluded on July 26 with the always popular Balloon Lady (Donna Pruett). This proved to be the library’s best-attended event of the summer with an all-ages crowd of 140!

Kayla was our Summer Reading Drawing winner at Walkertown Branch Library for ages 0-11, she loves Harry Potter and cats! She's very excited to find the library has a copy of the sixth book because that's the only one her family doesn't have yet.

Of course, we don't want to forget to mention our summer reading drawing winners! These lucky winners were chosen from over 100 youth entries, over 60 tween and teen entries, and over 570 adult entries.

Youth Winner: Kayla B.
Teen Winner: Julia G.
Adult Winner: Tamra Eccles
Branch-wide Winner: Sheila Bennett
