On the Same Page Community Read Book Announced for 2016

This year's selection for the Library's On the Same Page community read program is Barbara Kingsolver's highly acclaimed work, Animal, Vegetable, Miracle.

For one year the author and her family made a commitment to become locavores---only eating what they could grow and preserve themselves on their own rural Appalachian farm and what could be sourced from the local economy. Month by month Kingsolver, her husband, and daughter shared the challenges of growing, finding, cooking, and eating locally.

Engaging, sometimes chiding, and often hilarious, each chapter of Animal, Vegetable, Miracle brings to life each season's challenges and victories, not only in the garden abut also at the dining table.

We invite you to join your friends and neighbors as we all read Animal, Vegetable, Miracle and gain enlightening insight into our country's shifting attitudes toward our food, how we eat, and our agricultural industry.

Join us Saturday, September 10th at Bookmarks Festival of Books as we kickoff On the Same Page 2016. Our featured kickoff speaker will be Julia Shanks, author of the Farmer's Market Cookbook.

Ms. Shanks received her professional training at the California Culinary Academy. Her passion for cooking began at age 12 as she cooked her way through the Time-Life series of cookbooks. She has worked in restaurants around the country developing tastes for fresh, local, and seasonal foods. Today she consults with restaurants, farms, and food producers helping them maximize profits and streamline operations. In her tiny urban garden in Cambridge, MA she grows vegetables seven months a year.

Ms. Shanks is scheduled to speak from 2 pm to 2:45 pm Saturday, September 10th at the Milton Rhodes Center for the Arts on Spruce Street in downtown Winston-Salem.
