Books We Like for October

Vicarious by Paula Stokes. Vicarious is dark, gritty, and not for the faint of heart. It covers human trafficking, drug use, sex, mental issues, PTSD, and violence. Winter Kim is vulnerable and strong at the same time. She has experienced the worst of humanity and survived, but not unharmed. She has never truly been able to adapt to society, to being around other people. She does dangerous things to know that she is still alive, that she still has some measure of control. Everyday is a new challenge for her. Her sister is her lifeline. Without her sister, her life spirals even more out of control. She suspects everyone for Rose’s disappearance. This tale isn’t about happily ever after; this story is about being knocked down so hard, it is a struggle to pull yourself up every day. It is about knowing the difference between reality and illusion. Every step of the way you fight for, and with, Winter Kim. You feel her desperation, her resilience, and her vulnerability. A true page turner, Paula Stokes weaves a story that is like riding a roller coaster in the dark. Once you start, you won’t be able to turn back.

Wintersong (Wintersong #1) by S. Jae Jones. This story is Labyrinth meets Brother’s Grimm. It has that innocence that draws you in, and the darkness that consumes you. This tale takes you into dark forests filled with mythical creatures, with a strong female lead that truly wins you over. It is a maze of beauty and darkness, love and hate, happiness and despair, and sacrificing everything for the people you love . This tale will woo and seduce you with its passionate embrace. Liesl is a heroine that you can relate to. She isn’t drop-dead gorgeous. She is smart and resourceful. She really helps normal, everyday people identify with her character. The supporting characters will have you laughing, then wondering if laughing is appropriate! The Goblin King will steal your heart and crush it at the same time. I would like to say that this is a story where love conquers all, but it’s deeper than that, and much harder. This is a story about how life isn’t perfect, how love isn’t perfect, and the lengths that you have to go to once you embark on this fairy tale journey with Liesl.

Soulless by Gail Carriger. I could not put this book down! I laughed so hard at times, I had tears in my eyes! Alexia is a heroine that you could totally picture as yourself. It’s Steampunk meets Buffy the Vampire Slayer. Imagine a world where the supernatural: ghosts, vampires and werewolves are out of the closet, and no one thinks anything odd about it. Our stubborn, hot tempered heroine seems to get herself into situations that make you wonder how on Earth the women is still alive. Lord Maccon is loud and obnoxious, and a werewolf. The exchanges between the two become battles of wills that borders on epic. You will laugh until your sides hurt, hide your face when our witty heroine does something that any normal person would be embarrassed to do, and swoon with the side of romance that is thrown in. This story is delightful, witty, comical, and downright sassy. Find a nice cozy place to sit with a enjoyable cup of tea, because you won’t want to put this book down once you get sucked into the shenanigans!
