NEA Big Read: Writer's Workshop - Postponed until Sept. 22

Writer’s Workshop with Sheryl Monks - Postponed until Saturday, Sept. 22 at 10 a.m. and moved to the Lewisville Branch Library

Short story writing is an art in and of itself, and this informative and engaging workshop with award-winning author, Sheryl Monks, features writing and idea brainstorming exercises, and a discussion about form, character and narrative development. Explore the short form in an encouraging session and walk away with all the techniques to write or polish your own short fiction.

Writers of all ages are welcome to attend this free program.

Sheryl Monks is the author of Monsters in Appalachia, published by Vandalia Press, the creative imprint of West Virginia University Press. She holds an M.F.A. in fiction from Queens University of Charlotte. Her stories have appeared in Rkvry Quarterly, Electric Literature, The Butter, The Greensboro Review, storySouth, Regarding Arts and Letters, Night Train, and other journals, and in the anthologies Surreal South and Eyes Glowing at the Edge of the Woods: Contemporary West Virginia Fiction and Poetry, among others. Monsters in Appalachia is a Weatherford Award finalist, a Southern Book Prize finalist and a Foreword Indies Book finalist. Sheryl lives in Winston-Salem, N.C., where she works for a peer-reviewed medical journal. Look for Monsters in Appalachia at your local library.

Short Story Writing Contest
September 15 - October 10

For all those budding or experienced writers out there, the library will be sponsoring a Short Story Contest during our Big Read campaign. Writers of all ages will have until Wednesday, Oct. 10 to submit their most creative and compelling stories to their local library. Entries must be original work with up to 1,000 words. The Winston Salem Writers group will review all entries and choose the winners. Categories for entry include children, young adults and adults. Each winner will receive a $100 gift card, have their work added to the FCPL catalog and will be asked to read their short story at the Monster Ball finale event held on Saturday, Oct. 20 at the Central Library.

Since the program began in 2006, the National Endowment for the Arts (NEA) has funded more than 1,400 NEA Big Read programs, providing more than $19 million to organizations nationwide. In addition, Big Read activities have reached every Congressional district in the country.
