Children may practice reading aloud monthly to a trained-to-be-gentle therapy dog who loves to sit and listen.

Adare, an Australian Shepard, love to listen to children read. Once a month, volunteer Mary Donadio brings one of these friendly tail-wagging tutors to the Children's Area at Walkertown Branch. They settle in onto a blanket on the floor at the window overlooking the Community Garden.

Kids ages 3 - 11 then sit beside the well-trained dog--on a small chair or on the floor. Another family member is welcome to sit with the child. Donadio sits quietly very nearby as well.

Then your child gets approximately eight minutes of uninterrupted read-aloud time.

Therapy dogs who visit libraries and listen to children read aloud help raise reading skills. They also lower anxiety for anyone afraid of dogs, as these dogs are trained not to jump or bark. Other library members don't even know there's a dog on site one evening each month.

Dog lovers of all ages are welcome to drop in for a pet or doggie kiss between reading turns or before or after the program.

Call 336-703-2990 to register.
