CHILDREN'S PICTURE AND CHAPTER BOOKS

Picture Books

“Row, Row, Row Your Boat” by Jane Cabrera
This is a delightful picture book with stunning drawings set to a classic children’s song. Two friends row down a river singing about the different animals they encounter along their journey. Toddlers and preschool age children will love reading/singing this book together with parents or in a group storytime setting. This book is a must for your child’s personal library along with any book by Cabrera.

“Alan’s Big, Scary Teeth” by Jarvis
Alan is a big scary alligator who loves scarring all the animals of the jungle with his frightening teeth. But Alan has a secret no one could ever guess, his teeth are false, and one day his teeth go missing. This is a humorous picture book that children in grades K-2 will laugh out loud reading. Subtle themes of bullying and friendship will teach children that it’s better to be kind in the face of difficult situations.

Chapter Books

“Ronia, the Robber’s Daughter” by Astrid Lindgren
This chapter book is a delightful spin on William Shakespeare’s “Romeo and Juliet.” Ronia, the daughter of robber chieftain Mattis, is taught every day to hate the rival robber clan, the Borkas. However, one day she meets Birk, who turns out to be the son of her father’s great enemy. Determined to be friends, Ronia and Birk confront their parents and decide to live on their own instead of separating. Inspired by their children’s friendship, the two robber clans eventually decide to overcome their differences and make peace. Children grades 3-5 will be enchanted by the magical world of Ronia and Birk and will learn the value of true friendship and what it means to stand against hate.

“Savvy” by Ingrid Law
The Beaumont family is special as each possess a unique supernatural power that activates when they turn 13. When Mib Beaumont’s big day arrives, she is less than impressed with her new ability. Her grandfather can move mountains and her brother can control the weather, but her savvy seems only slightly more than ordinary. However, when her father is in an accident she is determined to find a way to help him. Through a coming-of-age journey, Mib discovers that sometimes a person’s true power comes not from a special superpower, but from the strength of the human spirit within. Children grades 3-5 will identify with Mib on what it’s like to be an outsider, and maybe discover their own savvy in this thrilling adventure story.
