Afterthoughts Book Club Reads "Dimestore" by Lee Smith at Walkertown Thursday, August 9, 11 am

In August, the Afterthoughts Book Club will be discussing the 2016 memoir Dimestore: A Writer’s Life by acclaimed Southern writer Lee Smith. Smith grew up in the small coal-mining town of Grundy in Southwest Virginia and currently resides in Hillsborough, North Carolina.

Dimestore: A Writer’s Life is a collection of fifteen essays Smith wrote with warmth and profound poignancy about the people and places that shaped her as both a writer and a person. Smith has been a writer for over forty-five years and is the author of books such as Fair and Tender Ladies, Oral History, and Saving Grace. She was born in Grundy in 1944 where her father ran a dimestore that gives her memoir its name.

Two years after graduating from Hollins College, Smith’s wrote her first novel The Last Day the Dog Bushes Bloomed in 1968. She moved to Chapel Hill, NC with her first husband in 1974 and has remained in North Carolina ever since.
