Synopsis and Discussion

Widespread showers and cloudy skies have dropped air quality levels into the middle Code GREEN range this afternoon as a cold front transits the Carolinas. As the front clears off to the east this evening, a drier and cooler air mass moves into the Triad and remains in places over the next couple of days. Temperatures will fall to slightly below normal through the period, with air quality levels easily remaining Code GREE for Monday and Tuesday. Mid-level moisture begins to move in from the west ahead of an approaching upper-level trough, overriding the dry high-pressure ridge at the surface to lock in cold air damming over the Triad on Wednesday to keep air quality levels Code GREEN. (Payne) *** Due to increased wildfire risk and severe drought across most of the state, the N.C. Forest Service has issued a statewide ban on all open burning and has canceled all burning permits statewide. ***
