Kickoff
The Summer Reading adventure kicks off with programs inside and outside the Forsyth County
Central Library. Pick up Summer Reading calendars and information about Library departments and
programs, Bookmarks, Forsyth County Behavioral Health, and Sawtooth School for Visual Art.
Summer Reading Kickoff
June 7 from 6-7:30 p.m.
Forsyth County Central Library
Activities on the lawn:
- Chef Floyd Davis will be cooking and sharing samples of jackfruit barbecue as a preview of
his Healthy Summer Cooking programs throughout the Library system.
Winston-Salem Police Department’s Paw Patrol
- The young and young at heart can enjoy facepainting, lawn games, bubbles, sidewalk chalk,
and icy pops (while supplies last) thanks to the Library’s outreach department.
Activities in the library:
- Gaming in Teen Central
- Gaming in the children’s department
- STEM activity by the North Carolina Cooperative Extension, Forsyth County Center in the
Makerspace at 6:15 p.m.
- Creek Critters from the City of Winston-Salem Recreation and Parks Department
- Grey Seal Puppets in the auditorium at 6:45 p.m.
Bright Star Theatre
Bright Star Touring Theatre is a national theatre company founded in Asheville, N.C., in 2002. They perform for schools and communities, both large and small, across the country. The show they’re bringing to the Library,
Once Upon a Time: Cinderella and Jack and the Beanstalk, is
tailor-made for a library adventure. This fun and interactive show is great for younger audiences or anyone who is young at heart.
Grey Seal Puppets
Grey Seal Puppets is an internationally acclaimed company that creates original puppet theatre, on-camera productions, and custom-built puppets and mascots. Stick around after the performance for a puppet demonstration.
Summer Healthy Cooking
Summer is the perfect time to cook on the grill and spend time with family and friends. Make this summer a healthy summer with recipes from the Library’s very own Chef Floyd Davis.
Chef Floyd will turn up the heat and the flavor with a delicious recipe for portobello mushroom burgers. Come hungry! All programs are from 11 a.m.-1 p.m.
The Little Theatre of Winston-Salem
The Little Theatre of Winston-Salem is the oldest theatrical organization in the Piedmont Triad. Audiences young and old have experienced spectacular productions for almost 90 years. This summer, the Little Theatre is putting on several different programs throughout our Library system.
Theatre Games for Kids
Ages 6-11. Theatre games warm actors up and help them explore being different people in different places.
Intro to Acting for Teens
Ages 12-18. Learn the basic theatrical techniques actors use to help them become more adaptable on stage.
Fairy Tales Retold
All ages. Enjoy
The Bremen Town Musicians, a retelling of a classic fairy tale by the Brothers Grimm.
Intro to Improv for Teens
Ages 12-18. Learn the basics for improv, a theatrical technique actors use to help them become more adaptable on stage.
Mad Science of the Triad
Mad Science of the Triad has been fostering a love of science, technology, engineering, and math among children for over 30 years. This summer, several branches will host shows and hands-on programs for children of all ages.
Mad Science Workshops
Ages 5-11. This hands-on workshop will give children a deeper understanding of fundamental scientific principles, spark a sense of wonder and discovery in children, and unlock the door to the captivating world of STEM. Space is limited, so call the branch you want to attend to register.
Mad Science Show
Grades K-5. This high-energy, action-packed show includes exciting experiments and demonstrations.
NC Zoo
The North Carolina Zoo has been part of the Old North State since 1967. Guests can discover more than 1,800 animals in multiple habitats. This summer, the Zoo is hitting the road and bringing a worldwide adventure to multiple Library branches! Come explore three continents, meet some awesome animal ambassadors, learn about famous pioneers and scientists, and dive into some adventurous jobs!
Sawtooth School for Visual Arts
Since its founding in 1945, Sawtooth School for Visual Art has served generations of artists, from skilled professionals to novices of all ages. Sawtooth and the Library are collaborating this summer to celebrate Sawtooth's "Here Come the Puppets" exhiit (June 8-July 20).
- Puppet Storytime at Sawtooth School for Visual Art
June 11, June 25, and July 9 at 10 a.m.
All ages. This puppet-themed intergenerational program is filled with stories, songs, and movement that encourage early literacy skill development.
- Sawtooth Puppet Parade
July 20 from 10 a.m.-12:30 p.m. at Forsyth County Central Library
All ages. Children and families will meet at the Forsyth County Central Library to make puppets and enjoy a Storytime before parading to Sawtooth for more making, letterpress cranking, and exhibit viewing.
Winston Salem Symphony
The Winston-Salem Symphony is one of the oldest and most respected professional arts organizations in the Triad. The Symphony makes dozens of educational opportunities available to children every year, and this summer, families will be able to see, touch, and play the real instruments that are used in the Winston-Salem Symphony Orchestra when they visit the Symphony Petting Zoo.
