On March 10, 2021, Deputy Rae responded to a call, involving a 9-year-old girl who had walked away from her home. The juvenile was having difficulty adjusting to her foster mother and the other children in the home. Deputy Rae located the juvenile sitting beside a busy road, at the entrance to the neighborhood. Deputy Rae sat on the ground beside the juvenile and asked for her to explain the events that led to her leaving the home. Deputy Rae had a caring demeanor which eased the tension the child was experiencing and aided him in determining the most fruitful manner to communicate with the child. Deputy Rae used the experiences he has gained as a law enforcement officer and a father to explain why her behavior was unacceptable and how she could improve her relationship with her foster family. It didn’t take long to realize this little girl was used to being moved from place to place. Deputy Rae was able to mediate a positive solution by being patient and showing empathy toward the situation the juvenile was in. This will make a lasting impression on this child. This incident was brought to light because a neighbor witnessed the actions of Deputy Rae, as he spoke with the child. When he saw a deputy in a clean, well-pressed uniform sit on the ground beside the child, he was impressed and continued to watch the exchange between Deputy Rae and the child. He was further impressed with the time Deputy Rae took to show this little girl that he cared for her wellbeing. Deputy Rae’s actions were noticed by a community member that he did not even know was watching and showed he is willing to take whatever time is needed to make a difference in someone’s life. His actions exemplify our motto: One Team, Many Missions, One Community.
