Find Your History with Historic North Carolina Digital Newspaper Collection

If online keyword searchable access to hundreds of historic North Carolina newspapers interests you, then you should be aware of the Historic North Carolina Digital Newspaper Collection, one of the best new resources brought to you by the efforts of NC LIVE.

The Historic North Carolina Digital Newspaper Collection is a valuable research tool for genealogists, historians, or anyone looking to retrieve information from previously inaccessible, older newspapers of North Carolina. This database provides researchers access to historic newspapers from all areas of North Carolina to dates ranging as far back as 1770. This collection helps bridge the gap between current online newspaper coverage, to that of material previously found by contacting libraries in the hopes that their collections would have access to microfilm versions of these older papers, followed perhaps by a car trip and long hours scanning through reels of microfilm in the hopes of finding something useful.

Thanks to the advances of optical character recognition software, all of the contents of the newspapers in this collection are searchable by keyword. This technology combined with the ability to perform advanced searches allows its users to quickly find information that normally would be difficult, if not impossible to find. In addition to keyword searching, it’s possible to limit searches by date ranges, particular cities, regions, or even specific newspapers. Not only can users retrieve results from database queries, they can also browse individual newspapers page by page as if the paper were in their hands.
