Community Efforts Organized Through the Health Department

BeHealthy Coalition
The BeHealthy Coalition is a collaborative body made up of community residents and professionals working to change lifestyles and mindsets to create healthy communities and healthful living in Forsyth County. The group meets monthly to address physical inactivity, poor nutrition and tobacco usage in the community. Contact: (336) 703-3175

Family Planning Review Committee
This committee reviews all information and educational materials used by the Family Planning Staff and Health Educators regardless of the type of material, the source or the intended audience. This review assures that the materials are suitable for the population and community for which they are intended. The committees must consist of five to nine members who are broadly representative of the community. Meetings are held bi-annually.

Forsyth Adolescent Health Coalition
The Forsyth Adolescent Health Coalition (FAHC) is a grassroots initiative of concerned professionals, paraprofessionals, and volunteers that advocate for and develop concrete strategies to address the health needs of our community's adolescents. Our Mission is to reduce adolescent pregnancy in Forsyth County and to support teens and their families through pregnancy prevention strategies.

Forsyth County Child Fatality Prevention Team
The Forsyth County Child Fatality Prevention Team review medical examiner reports, death certificates, and other records for deceased county residents under the age of 18. Members discuss outcomes of services and circumstances surrounding the child’s death. The purposes of the CFPT are to promote understanding of the causes of childhood deaths, identify deficiencies in the delivery of services to children and families by public agencies and make and carry out recommendations for changes that will prevent future child deaths. Members are appointed by the County Commissioners. Agencies include Health Dept., local hospitals, DSS, medical examiner, law enforcement, District attorney’s office, schools, Guardians ad litem, parents and other family agencies.

Forsyth County Childhood Lead Poisoning Prevention Coalition
The Forsyth County Lead Coalition is a group made up of community leaders including parents, industry, representatives of the construction and housing industry and medical providers. These leaders are in the process of learning about childhood lead poisoning issues in Forsyth County through quarterly meetings where guest speakers from HUD, EPA and other organizations speak.

Healthy Community Coalition
The Forsyth County Healthy Community Coalition works to improve the health and quality of life of all residents in Forsyth County. The Coalition focuses on creating system and policy changes that will make an impact and improve health. This Coalition is open to all community members and membership is FREE. Forsyth County Rabies Prevention Committee
The purpose of the Rabies Prevention Committee is to increase the number of pets in our community that receive rabies vaccinations by increasing accessibility of low cost rabies vaccinations to pet owners in Forsyth County; to implement a rabies vaccination clinic a minimum of two times per year in Forsyth County; and to ensure that rabies information is readily available in the community. Meetings are held six times a year.

Infant Mortality Reduction Coalition
The Forsyth County Infant Mortality Reduction Coalition works to save babies' lives. The group educates community members about how to prevent infant deaths and also advocates for policy changes to improve women's and infant's health. Contact Debbie Mason, Coalition Coordinator, at (336) 703-3260 or masonda@forsyth.cc to arrange for a guest speaker, order publications, or join the Coalition.

The Infant Mortality Reduction Coalition also encourages local restaurants to cut out their smoking section. Second hand smoke can cause premature delivery, the leading cause of infant death in this community. For a list of smoke-free restaurants in Forsyth County, visit our website

Male Involvement of Forsyth County Coalition
This coalition is the combined Fathers & Friends Advisory Board and members of other coalitions and work groups in Forsyth County whose primary focus is to provide a venue for male involvement in developing family policy. Members facilitate activities to educate and participate in community projects which advocate for male friendly policy in child support, child rearing, child health care, financial support, and employment. Meetings are held bimonthly.

P.O.S.S.E.
Preventing Ongoing Spread of STDs Everywhere is a group of community members and health professionals who meet monthly to discuss the need of STDs/HIV prevention and care in Forsyth County. Meetings are held on the last Tuesday of the month at 3:00 p.m.

Department Employee Workgroups

Epidemiology Team
The Epidemiology Team, “Epi-Team”, responds to communicable disease and infectious disease concerns and outbreaks within Forsyth County. The team consists of numerous staff professionals who provide twenty-four hour coverage, seven days a week for any emergencies that request immediate attention. Meetings are held quarterly.

Domestic Violence Committee
The purpose of the Domestic Violence Committee is to establish policy, develop and strengthen current program protocols, promote awareness and train all employees in the Department of Public Health about domestic violence and the surrounding issues. To ensure that domestic violence is addressed in in-house Quality Assurance reviews; To ensure that domestic violence materials and resources are available to all staff.

Infection Control Committee
This committee develops and reviews policies and procedures used to minimize the risk of spreading infections. The committee is comprised of representatives from each Division of the Health Department. Meetings are held at least annually or as needed.

Safety Committee
The mission of the Safety Committee is to preserve and protect the health and safety of employees by assessing occupational health and safety needs of employees and identifying, coordinating, implementing and evaluating health department policies and programs related to occupational health and safety.  The committee also identifies and examines the facility of the Forsyth County Health Department, including the building, grounds, maintenance and security, and the impact they have on the customers, visitors and employees in order to insure that health department services are provided in a clean, safe facility.  The committee is made up of health department division representatives and meets bi-annually.

Social Wellness Committee
The purpose of the Social Wellness Committee is to plan and develop social and wellness activities for the employees of the Department of Public Health. The Social/Wellness Committee meets quarterly and is responsible for the following functions: social/wellness calendar, annual holiday party, employee cookout planning, handles issues regarding employee wellness and morale.

The Web Site Development group is responsible for the design and maintenance of the Health Department Web pages.
