Corporal Butcher, Deputy Bier, and Deputy Idol, along with others, responded to a call involving a suicidal subject armed with a shotgun who initially refused to exit his residence. Upon arrival, deputies were confronted with an extremely volatile and high-risk situation. The subject was experiencing a mental health crisis, was heavily intoxicated, armed with a shotgun, and initially barricaded himself inside his home. Despite the clear and imminent danger to themselves and others, the deputies demonstrated exceptional restraint, professionalism, and sound tactical judgment throughout the encounter. When the subject ultimately exited the residence while still armed, the three deputies listed above were in direct close contact with him and maintained composure and discipline under extraordinary stress. Rather than resorting to deadly force, they employed patience, verbal de-escalation, and coordinated tactics to safely manage the threat. Through their actions, the subject was successfully disarmed and taken into custody without injury to deputies, the subject, or the community. Most notably, the deputies’ restraint and commitment to preserving life directly resulted in the subject surrendering and receiving the mental health assistance he urgently needed. Their actions prevented the tragic loss of life, either by the subject’s own hand or by lethal force. During a time of year that carries particular emotional significance, just before the Christmas season. This incident reflects the highest standards of law enforcement service. The deputies involved exemplified courage, compassion, and professionalism, balancing officer safety with a genuine commitment to the sanctity of human life. Their conduct brings great credit to themselves, their division, and this agency as a whole. It is respectfully recommended that the deputies involved receive formal recognition for their exemplary performance and actions.
On December 2, 2025, FCSO Animal Services Deputy C. Nichols responded to a complaint from a community member regarding a dog that repeatedly escaped and entered her property. What made this situation particularly concerning was that the resident has a disabled child who frequently spends time in the yard to enjoy the outdoors and the comfort that fresh air provides. The ongoing presence of the loose dog left this mother feeling helpless and unable to ensure a safe environment for her child.
After listening carefully to the details, Deputy Nichols took swift and decisive action to address the issue and restore the family’s sense of safety and peace in their own yard.
The community member later wrote:
“Thank you, Sheriff Kimbrough and the Forsyth County Staff, for your immediate response. I got a visit this morning asking about my situation. Because of the concern your Deputies displayed, I now feel there’s a solution coming quickly... Deputy Nichols assured us, he’s on this case until the end... Thank you in advance for the hope of living peacefully in our great city, because of your team!!”
Deputy Nichols provided this family with support on both a professional and personal level, helping them feel whole and protected once again. His actions reflect the very heart of our mission. Deputy Nichols deserves recognition not only for this exemplary service, but for the dedicated, compassionate work he provides to our community every day.
