Forsyth County Public Library - serving Forsyth County since 1906

Telling Our Stories Photo Exhibit
News Release
Thursday, October 09, 2008

The Telling Our Stories Photography Exhibit celebrates the 2008 Cultural Resources “Telling Our Stories” theme, and will be on display at public libraries statewide. The exhibit includes works by contemporary, professional and amateur photographers, as well as archival photographs. The formal opening of the exhibit will be Thursday, October 16th, at 1:00 PM in the Forsyth County Public Library, located at 660 W. Fifth Street in Winston-Salem. The exhibit will be at Forsyth County Public Library through November 6.

The top winners of Our State magazine’s amateur photography contest will be recognized as part of the exhibit’s formal opening. The winning entries have captured the spirit of North Carolina through images of people, places, wildlife, and landscapes, photographed in color and black and white. For 75 years, Our State has chronicled the lives of North Carolinians. A selection committee headed by Cultural Resources Secretary, Lisbeth C. “Libba” Evans, chose from among works submitted by some of the state’s best professional photographers for this exhibit. These singular photographs examine nature, perceptions, spirituality, conflict, and the human condition, from across the state or throughout the world.

Another first for the Telling Our Stories Photography Exhibit is a tour of images from the North Carolina State Archives (part of the Department of Cultural Resources) which includes a collection of more than three million images dating from 1860s daguerreotypes, to color images from the 1990s. Presidents, farmers, landmarks, war and peacetime images are captured in this primarily black and white collection. The State Library of North Carolina, through the Department of Cultural Resources, made the traveling exhibit available to public libraries across the state.

These photographs focus a lens on our state at work and play, young and old, and reflect the many stories that can be told about our North Carolina. The Telling Our Stories Photography Exhibit allows the Department of Cultural Resources to showcase some of the many ways the state’s stories can be told, and offers the opportunity to reflect, evaluate, and appreciate North Carolina and those who call it home.

In conjunction with the Telling Our Stories Photography Exhibit, Digital Forsyth representatives invite you to bring your favorite Forsyth County photographs to share and perhaps get identified at the Digital Forsyth “Share-a-Thon” from 1-3 PM on October 16th. Representatives from the Forsyth County Public Library, Old Salem, Wake Forest University and Winston-Salem State University will be available to share their expertise as well as answer questions. Digital Forsyth is an online photograph collection featuring over 7,000 historical photographs of Forsyth County.
