Staff Members of the Year 2011 - Detention

DETENTION

PFC Reynolds has been named Detention Staff Member of the Year for a selfless act of courage where he put his life at risk to save the life of a fellow staff member.

On October 1, 2011, Pfc. Reynolds responded to a radio call from 8 South Housing Unit regarding an officer engaged in a fight with an inmate. Upon arriving he observed Sgt. D. Huttar being beaten in the upper body. Pfc. Reynolds was attempting to enter the doorway when the inmate sprayed him directly in the eyes with O.C. spray.

Even after being sprayed in the eyes, Pfc. Reynolds engaged the inmate and took him to the floor, thus ensuring that Sgt. Huttar could exit the area without being further assaulted and injured. Pfc. Reynolds, even while enduring the pain of being sprayed in the eyes with O.C., did not hesitate to place himself in harm’s way to end what was an attempt on Sgt. Huttar’s life.
