Bob O'Connor in Walkertown

Nationally renowned author/historian Bob O'Connor of Charles Town, WV will speak at the Walkertown Branch Library on August 4th, at 7 pm about James Hanger, the first amputee of the Civil War. Hanger, member of the Churchville Cavalry, of the 14th Virginia Cavalry, CSA, was wounded at Philippi, VA in the first battle of the Civil War. As a result of his injury, Hanger built an artificial leg for himself and then opened an artificial limb factory in 1861.

Hanger, Inc. today is in its 154th year and is the country's largest manufacturer of artificial limbs. The company made the prosthetic for the dolphin in the Hollywood movie Dolphin Tale.

O'Connor has been named finalist four times in national book awards. He has published ten books, mostly on the Civil War. His website is www.boboconnorbooks.com. His books will be available for purchase and signing at the event.
