Poet Joseph Mills is Coming Lewisville on April 5th at 2 pm.

Join us for a special afternoon with beloved poet and UNCSA professor, Joseph Mills, who will be reading from his latest work, Exit, Pursued by a Bear

"Those working wardrobe know there are two kinds of sheets in Shakespeare, white and bloody."

So begins "Enter the Duchess in a white sheet" the first poem in Exit, pursued by a bear, a new collection of poems from award-winning writer Joseph Mills. The volume contains over sixty poems, each inspired by a stage direction in a Shakespeare play. Mills offers variations and revisions of both well-known figures, such as Juliet, Hamlet, and Shylock, and minor characters; he gives bemused speculations about the playwright’s life, and, over the course of the book, he engages with all of Shakespeare’s plays. By turns serious and playful, these poems stand alone and serve as a companion to Shakespeare’s work. Mills holds an endowed chair, the Susan Burress Wall Distinguished Professorship in the Humanities, at the University of North Carolina School of the Arts. His work has been featured several times on The Writer’s Almanac with Garrison Keillor and in hundreds of forums including former U.S. Poet Laureate Ted Kooser’s American Life in Poetry. His other Press 53 poetry collections are Angels, Thieves and Winemakers, Second Edition (2015), This Miraculous Turning (2014) winner of the 2015 Roanoke-Chowan Award, Sending Christmas Cards to Huck and Hamlet (2012), Love and Other Collisions(2010), and Somewhere During the Spin Cycle (2006).
