Haiku Contest at the Clemmons Branch Library

Can you haiku?! In celebration of National Poetry Month and as part of FCPL's On the Same Poem program, the Clemmons Branch Library is holding a month-long haiku contest!

The rules are very simple. All haikus must be composed of three short lines, 17 syllables in all. The first line should have 5 syllables, the second line should have 7 syllables, and the third line should have 5 syllables. That's it! They can be about whatever you like. (Though if they happen to be about books and reading and how awesome public libraries are, well, it certainly wouldn't hurt your chances!) The best three haikus will be featured in FCPL's monthly online newsletter in May.

Here's an example:

Giraffes have black tongues.

Why is that? What did they lick?

Maybe mulberries?

The deadline for submissions is Saturday, April 30. Just swing by the Clemmons Branch Library and drop your haikus off at the circulation desk or at our poetry book display. All ages are welcome to participate. We're excited to read what you come with!
