In July, the Afterthoughts Book Club will be discussing News of the World, 2016 National Book Award finalist by Paulette Jiles. Captain Jefferson Kidd travels throughout Texas in the 1870s as a newsreader. In exchange for gold, he agrees to transport a young girl (formerly kidnapped by the Kiowa tribe) to her surviving family. The two form an unlikely friendship framed by Jiles’ descriptive prose of post-Civil War Texas.
Jiles, who resides in San Antonio, based Kidd’s character on the real-life ancestor of a Texan family friend. Her considerable historical research and poetic narrative will appeal to even non-Western genre fans. For more insight into Jiles’ writing, read her National Book Awards profile here: http://www.nationalbook.org/nba2016finalist_f_jiles-news-of-the-world.html
Walkertown Branch Library, Conference Room. Light refreshments will be served. All are welcome to join us for a friendly and interesting discussion!
