Encourage Literacy in your Pre-Kindergarten Child at Walkertown Branch Library

What is the 1,000 Books Before Kindergarten (1KB4K) program?

1KB4K is a great way to promote a love of reading in your child before they begin Kindergarten. You can sign up at any Forsyth County Public Library by asking a Youth Services Librarian about the program!

When you enroll your child in 1KB4K at Walkertown Branch Library, you will receive a reusable book bag with fun information and book-tracking bookmarks 1-3 inside. Every child in your family can participate, as long as they haven’t started Kindergarten yet.

Bag stock is limited, bookmarks and information packets always available.

For every book you read, cross off the next number on your book-tracking bookmark. Once you have completed a bookmark, bring it back to Walkertown Branch Library to receive a small prize for a job well-done!

As you complete the bookmarks, we will give you the next bookmark in the series. Once you’ve finished bookmark 10, that’s it! You’ve read 1,000 books! Bring bookmark 10 back to Walkertown Branch Library to receive a prize and a stylish Certificate of Achievement, which is a great photo opportunity.

Does reading 1,000 books seem totally overwhelming? Here are some ways to reach your goals before Kindergarten starts:

  • Good news if you like to read and then re-read and then re-re-read your favorite Little Blue Truck, like our friend Josh in the header image. Each time you read the same book, that counts as one book!
  • Practice another language by getting a bilingual book, such as Green is a Chile Pepper by Roseanne Thong.
  • Attend a Storytime together! You can find information about our youth programs, including storytime, by clicking this link!

Interested in signing up?

If you have any questions or would like to sign up for the 1,000 Books Before Kindergarten program, you can do so at any Forsyth County Public Library! You can stop by your local branch and ask to speak with their Youth Services Librarian.
