Your Rain Garden and You: Protecting creek habitats with backyard plants

Join us virtually on Wednesday, March 24, 11 a.m.

In this presentation participants will learn how we all are part of an environment - family, neighborhood, larger community, and watershed. Even though we may not have a creek running through our backyard, the water from rain that runs off our roofs and driveways does impact the water quality of nearby creeks and streams through the municipal storm drain system.

Participants will learn some of the reasons why “rainscaping” principles are beneficial for water quality and wildlife and gain access to helpful tools that will guide their own backyard journeys. Though native plants and rain gardens are the main topics of discussion, participants need little or no gardening experience for the session, while experienced gardeners will find new resources to guide their next steps.

There will be time for questions about “rainscaping,” which participants may submit in advance after picking up the informational materials at the Lewisville Branch Library. These materials are recommended to enhance the learning experience but are not required.

Our presenter, Danica Heflin, is the environmental programs coordinator for Stormwater SMART of the Piedmont Triad Regional Council. The program is a cooperative partnership between county and municipal governments and has as its goal education and outreach about stormwater pollution, water quality issues, and water conservation.
