Black History Month Film Series: Celebrating Black Women

In honor of Black History Month, Central Library will host a film series celebrating black women. The films will be screened each Thursday in February 2022. The series will include: "Sarafina!," "Loving," "Harriet," and "Respect." Each screening will be limited to 15 people on a first-come, first-served basis.

"Sarafina!"
Feb. 3 at 2 p.m.

South African teenagers fight against apartheid in the Soweto Uprising. Starring Whoopi Goldberg, Leleti Khumalo, Miriam Makeba, and John Kani.

"Loving"
Feb. 10 at 2 p.m.

The story of Richard and Mildred Loving, a couple whose arrest for interracial marriage in 1960s Virginia began a legal battle that would end with the Supreme Court's historic 1967 decision. Starring Ruth Negga and Joel Edgerton.

"Harriet"
Feb. 17 at 2 p.m.

The extraordinary tale of Harriet Tubman's escape from slavery and transformation into one of America's greatest heroes, whose courage, ingenuity, and tenacity freed hundreds of slaves and changed the course of history. Starring Cynthia Erivo, Janelle MonĂ¡e, and Leslie Odom Jr.

"Respect"
Feb. 24 at 5 p.m.

Following the rise of Aretha Franklin's career from a child singing in her father's church's choir to her international superstardom, RESPECT is the remarkable true story of the music icon's journey to find her voice. Starring Jennifer Hudson, Forest Whitaker, Marlon Wayans, Tituss Burgess, Mary J. Blige, and Audra McDonald.
