Lewisville Historical Society to Present on Union Regiments in North Carolina During the Civil War

Did you know that at the start of the American Civil War both Union and Confederate regiments were formed in the border states of Maryland, Kentucky, and Missouri? As the fighting progressed, enlistments were made in the southern states where Union troops held ground and recruiters were even sent behind Confederate lines. Between 1862 and 1864, 8,000 soldiers comprised eight North Carolina Union regiments. Where were these regiments formed? Who were their recruits and from where did they come? Did they see action in battle?

Using the records of the National Archives, local historian William Ewalt found the answers to those questions and more. Come hear a summary of his findings at as he presents "Union Regiments in North Carolina During the Civil War: A Little-known Story" at the "Lewisville Historical Society Presents ..." meeting on Monday, Jan. 8 at 6 p.m. at the Mary Alice Warren Community Center in Lewisville.

Ewalt is an officer and board member of the Mayflower Society of North Carolina and has held or currently holds positions in the Department of North Carolina Sons of Union Veterans of the Civil War, the Bethabara Chapter of the Sons of the American Revolution, the Major General George Stoneman Camp #6 of the North Carolina Sons of Union Veterans, and the Forsyth Genealogical Society. He holds multiple history degrees and has enjoyed studying rich genealogical stories and North Carolina history since moving to Lewisville with his wife Kathy in 2010. Ewalt has been a member of Lewisville Historical Society for more than 10 years.

"Lewisville Historical Society Presents ..." is a bimonthly program of the Lewisville Historical Society and the Lewisville Branch Library. It is free and open to the public. Participants do not need to be members of the society to attend. The group meets at the Mary Alice Warren Community Center in Lewisville.
