K-9 Hummer Retires

The Forsyth County Sheriff’s Office announces that Hummer, K-9 partner of Corporal D. A. Deweese, retired from service on December 18, 2015. During a training event in July, Hummer sustained a traumatic injury to his jaw and snout while performing routine bite-sleeve training.

Corporal Deweese and Hummer were paired in 2011, after having two previous K-9 handlers. They attended training at K-2 K-9 Solutions and became a certified Dual Purpose Team through North American Police Working Dog Association (NAPWDA). Hummer also assisted Corporal Deweese in attaining his Trainer’s Certification to train the Forsyth County Sheriff’s Office K-9 Unit.

Hummer is credited for numerous drug seizures, confirmed tracking of subjects and apprehensions while protecting the citizens of Forsyth County over the past 4 years. Hummer was unable to fully recover from his injuries in order to continue law enforcement duties. However, he will spend retirement as Corporal Deweese’s cherished pet, guard dog and family member. The Sheriff’s Office is very grateful for the skill and dedication of its entire K-9 Unit and the valuable service it renders to our agency and the community.
