The new Central Library opened to rave reviews as a crowd in excess of 400 people gathered for a 11 am ribbon-cutting ceremony oheld in front of the Library. Before the doors officially opened, a sculpture created by Birmingham, Alabama based artist Dee Dee Morrison was unveiled. Morrison's sculpture, entitled "Timeless Purpose," features an open book sitting on a book stand with the word "library" cut into the pages in different languages and scripts from around the world. At night the sculpture will be back-lit with the words literally spilling from the pages onto the lawn below.
Built at a cost of $28 million the new library has 103,000 square feet of space and over a quarter of a million materials, including books, DVDs, magazines and more, and a 48 seat Internet connected computer area with a 20 seat computer training lab.
