Celebrate Black History Month at Walkertown Branch Library with a program of African-American music, culture, and history.
Local singers W.T. Rajive and Amelia Patel will present the first part of the program. Rajive will discuss his own story as an almost-member of the famous doo wop group the Drifters while relating the black experience through the history of music. Patel will discuss Ella Fitzgerald and the audition that changed her life with help from Marilyn Monroe. The two will perform classical, jazz, and rhythm and blues songs to illustrate their stories and experiences, including the hit 1962 song “Up on the Roof” by the Drifters.
In the second part of the program, Fam Brownlee, historian at the Forsyth County Public Library N.C. Collections, will lecture on the strike led by African American women against the R.J. Reynolds Tobacco Company in 1943.
Light refreshments will be served after the program concludes. The reception is sponsored by the Friends of the Walkertown Library.
