Teens Can Indulge Their Inner O'Keeffe at Art Hour

At the tender age of 14, Georgia O'Keeffe moved from her family's farm to Sacred Heart Academy, a Catholic boarding school on the outskirts of Madison, Wisc. According to Full Bloom: The Art and Life of Georgia O'Keeffe by Hunter Drohojowska-Philp, her first assignment in art class was to sketch a plaster cast of a baby’s hand. When she turned hers in, the teacher -- a "stuffy" nun named Sister Angelique -- judged it harshly and nearly brought Georgia to tears. But she stuck with it, practiced diligently, and made significant improvement. By the end of the year, Sister Angelique proudly displayed Georgia's work around the classroom.

Here at the Central Library, our resident art instructor Lisseth Martinez doesn't believe in harsh criticism. She believes that with a little practice, a little inspiration, and a little determination, anyone can create beautiful works of art. She loves to foster that sense of creativity in our young patrons. That's why she is presenting Art Hour, our new art program for teens and tweens. At each session, the kids will take on a different and exciting art project to challenge their skills.
